The first School magazine ‘Rook’ was published in July 1955 at the end of the very first year in the life of Cray Valley Technical School. Our magazine, which grew in size over the (we thought 19) years of it’s life, was for many years laboriously typeset by hand using traditional lead type. Under the watchful eye of Leo Walmsley all the printing processes were performed in-house at the back of the ‘lower’ art room where the cases of type and the old treadle-operated printing press lived.
Many boys have kept their copies and it’s thanks to them that we were able to compile the ‘Rooks CD’. This sold many copies up until 2009 when, for the first time all the Rooks were made available to read online. With the launch of our third generation website these have now all been made available to download as PDF documents.
Up until November 2011 we all thought that the final year of publication was 1973 but a copy of the 1975 Rook was found on Ebay. So by simple deduction, if there was a 1975 there must be a 1974 lurking out there! In response to a request to seek out this elusive final missing copy Kevin Saggers kindly came up with a copy and this was published here on 10th November 2011. Our PDF archive now covers every page of all 21 Rooks from 1955 to 1975. With almost 900 pages to peruse you are bound to find many things of interest.
